TaskTree is a task tracking app created by Rad Collab to help people with ADHD. The app has been an incredible social experiment that is ever evolving over the past few years as it has been built in the public eye, taking live user feedback from social media comments. In this most recent iteration, I was tasked to illustrate a series of birds with interchangeable parts as part of a game being added to the app.

An illustration of circles filled with various birds sitting on a leaf bed. All of the birds are variations of the traits you can find within the app. The circles are sitting on top of a plum background.

Birds & Traits

The way the game works is that by completing tasks, you gain hearts that lead you to collecting new birds for your tree and earning traits to make your birds look more unique. The challenge was to find a way to allow for interchangeable features that would keep the birds looking unique yet cohesive.

A solid white, plain bird which is the base bird you get in the app. this is the bird created to apply a variation of traits to.

A base bird was designed to house all of the interchangeable traits

Boxes which are filled with a variety of patterns, showing how the body of a bird can look. Each pattern has 8 color variations as well to pick between.

A series of traits were created, patterns were given multiple color ways to add further customization

A depiction of each trait separated into trhee blocks. One block shows all of the eye options, one shows all of the crest options, and one shows all of the beak options that you can pick between.

Process

This project started with a few sketches of birds, a realistic tree drawing in an app, and a dream.

Initial illustrations of bird patterns, trait options, and an idea of what the blank bird could look like. To the left is a mockup of how the tree you collect birds in could sit.
